11:20 – 12:10  Writing Policies That Aren’t Miserable for Everyone Involved Every organization has policies, and for good reason. Consistent decision making, standardized approaches, and clearly defined roles and responsibilities makes sure that everyone understands how to interact with different teams to get things done. Policies are good but almost everything about the way we commonly do them is an awful experience, from the team that has to draft this monstrosity of legalese, to the long and drawn out approval process where arguments about commas last long into the night, to the poor engineers who need to bring it to an oracle to decipher it so they can do their jobs. Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act Strategies – Successes and Shortfalls As higher education institutions strive to meet their compliance obligations with Section 501 and 505(b)(2) of the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act’s Safeguards Rule, compliance with some provisions may be easier said than done. Since the safeguards rule is not overly prescriptive in how each safeguard must be implemented, there is a wide range of strategies and approaches being used. What are the most common shortfalls we see in compliance strategies with the revised Safeguards rule? What strategies are being employed by higher education institutions who have successfully overcome some of the more challenging provisions? How can your organization position itself so that it is ready to demonstrate continued compliance with these and future requirements? – Chris Mallory, Ferrilli
